In 2014 and 2015, the Palm Center focused on dismantling the military’s medical rationale for discrimination against transgender troops. In this study by a former US Surgeon General and retired Flag and General Officers, the Palm Center showed that the military’s medical rationale for discrimination was not based on evidence. The New York Times published an editorial quoting from our study and urging the Defense Secretary to read it. Shortly after the publication of the editorial, the Defense Secretary announced, for the first time in US history, that he would review the transgender ban.
