SAN FRANCISCO, CA — May 22, 2014 — Two UCLA scholars have released a new research memorandum estimating the number of currently-serving as well as veteran military personnel. According to the new memo, Transgender Military Service in the United States, 15,500 transgender personnel are serving currently in the active, reserve and guard components, and 134,300 transgender individuals are veterans of military service. The scholars, Dr. Gary J. Gates and Dr. Jody L. Herman, report that transgender citizens are approximately twice as likely to serve in the military as non-transgender Americans.
