How We Won: Progressive Lessons From The Repeal Of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

Huffington Post Media Group has announced that its second ebook release, due out Sept. 20, will be Aaron Belkin’s book on the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell”: How We Won: Progressive Lessons from the Repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.’

How We Won argues that lessons from the repeal campaign challenge some of the left’s most entrenched conventional wisdom about how to successfully set social policy.

Of How We Won, Arianna Huffington says: “Aaron Belkin’s account of the hard-won effort to overturn ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is a fascinating and timely read.

In the book, Belkin shows that to persuade Congress to repeal the law, the gay community had to convince the American people that allowing gay men and lesbians to serve openly would not undermine the military. He then describes the strategies that he and others used to change the public’s mind about gay troops.

In addition to the ebook release, which coincides with the final step of “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal, a hard copy edition is planned for next year.

Belkin is Associate Professor of Political Science at San Francisco State University and Director of the Palm Center.
